Fulton County's Veterans Preference Policy

Fulton County supports the hiring of veterans and will give preference to applicants who are veterans of the United States Armed Forces of the United States through the extension of an invitation to interview, provided that the veteran meets all of the knowledge, skills, and eligibility requirements of the job. Veterans’ preference provides for hiring preference on initial appointment only. Employees with veterans’ preference compete equally with all other candidates for subsequent transfer and promotional opportunities.

How to Claim Veterans' Preference: If you are applying for a job with Fulton County, during the application process, you will be given an opportunity to indicate your status as a veteran or disabled veteran on the employment application. You will also need to provide a copy of your discharge papers (DD-214) in support of a claim for veterans’ preference. Nothing in this Policy guarantees that a veteran will be selected for any position with Fulton County.

Veterans info: Priority of Service for Veterans

Veterans and eligible spouses continue to receive priority of service for all DOL -funded job training programs, including WIOA programs. Priority of service is discussed in Training and Employment Guidance Letter (TEGL) 10-09. Further, representatives funded through Jobs for Veterans State Grants (JVSG), a required partner program under WIOA, are located in many American Job Centers. The WIOA Title I Adult program also provides priority services for public assistance recipients, other low-income individuals, or individuals who are basic skills deficient.

States and local areas must apply priority of service in the order below:

  • First, to veterans and eligible spouses who also are included in the groups given statutory priority for WIOA adult formula funds. This means that veterans and eligible spouses who also are recipients of public assistance, other low-income individuals*, or individuals who are basic skills deficient would receive first priority for services provided with WIOA adult formula funds.
  • Second, to non-covered persons (individuals who are not veterans or eligible spouses) who are included in the groups given priority for WIOA adult formula funds.
  • Third, to veterans and eligible spouses who are not included in WIOA’s priority groups.
  • Fourth, to any other populations identified by the Governor or Local Board for priority.
  • Last, to non-covered persons outside the groups given priority under WIOA.

Accountability Courts - VETS

The Fulton County Superior Court, a pioneer in recognizing its responsibility within the criminal justice system created the Fulton County Accountability Courts VETS initiative to facilitate a multi-agency approach to healing the underlying factors that caused the offender to enter the criminal justice system.

VETS role is to significantly enhance the effectiveness of a multifaceted clinical intervention for veterans that have entered the criminal justice system as a result of substance abuse.

This initiative combines the sanctioning power of the treatment drug court with effective treatment services that seek to break the cycle of criminal behavior and alcohol or drug use. This initiative seeks to address the gaps in the continuum of treatment that are not currently addressing the needs of returning war veterans to this jurisdiction who differ from those within the population we currently serve. This initiative is being accomplished through the purpose areas of planning, research, evaluation, technology improvement programs, prevention and education programs.

Clients accepted into this program have very high risk factors associated with program failure and very few intact protective factors. Most of the participants that have returned to this jurisdiction have sought to deal with the traumas associated with war and re-acclimating to an urban setting by becoming addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.
