Under Georgia law, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office is responsible for official investigation of deaths in certain circumstances. In general, these include deaths that are thought to result from injury or poisoning (such as homicide, suicide, and accidental deaths), and those deaths that are sudden, unexpected, and not readily explainable at the time of death.
In these cases, the Medical Examiner performs an investigation to determine the cause and manner of death, and to clarify the circumstances surrounding death. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office performs autopsies and other postmortem examinations as an important part of the death investigation process.
