Environmental Health

The Environmental Health Services Department works to ensure that the air we breathe, the water we drink and use and the food we consume are free of contamination and harm.

Environmental Health Services coordinates and oversees the programs and regulations that prevent illness, disability and death from human interaction with the environment. We investigate and respond to health emergencies including those that may be of a chemical or biological nature and pose a risk to the citizens of Fulton County. The staff of our Environmental Health Services especially works to safeguard the health of populations that may be vulnerable to environmental hazards—children, the elderly and those with disabilities. We serve the public from three district offices.

Environmental Justice Initiative

The Environmental Justice Initiative (EJI) strives to ensure that no demographic group is disproportionately affected by adverse environmental conditions created when pollution sources are located in communities with a high minority population, low median income or several other social factors. In 2010, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved funding for an Environmental Planner to implement and provide coordination of the Environmental Justice Initiative within the county. The Environmental Justice Initiative has led to policy and planning changes such as:

  • EJ Amendment to the Zoning Resolution (2013)
  • Pipeline Amendment to the Zoning Resolution (2014)
  • EJ content explicitly written in Fulton County’s Comprehensive Plan 2035 (2016)

ONGOING ACHIEVEMENTS AND OUTCOMES OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROGRAM INCLUDE

  • Providing public health input during preliminary planning discussions such as zoning, advisory/steering committees, and policy development.
  • Building partnerships to address Environmental Justice issues
  • Developing and implementing new policies and/or policy changes that promote the reduction of exposure to environmental hazards or pollutants
  • Assisting residents with taking steps to recognizing potential exposures
  • Providing internal guidance to Fulton County government

The Environmental Justice Program is a 2013 National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) Model Practice Award recipient
