Fulton County Recognizes September as National Preparedness Month

September 11, 2024
In an instant, disasters can upend our lives, leaving communities vulnerable and unprepared. The Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA), in collaboration with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is encouraging residents to take proactive steps during National Preparedness Month this September.

This year’s theme, “Start a Conversation,” centers on increasing preparedness within our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, emphasizing the importance of building resilience before disaster strikes. AFCEMA is proud to join a nationwide initiative involving thousands of private, public, and nonprofit organizations, all united to inspire and equip citizens to be ready for any natural or man-made disaster.

“Disasters can reshape our lives in the blink of an eye,” said Joseph Barasoain, AFCEMA Director. “It’s critical for every individual, household, and business to be prepared. National Preparedness Month provides an opportunity for all of us to take steps that ensure our personal safety, the safety of our workplaces, and the safety of our communities.”

Each week in September will focus on a specific preparedness theme to guide residents through the process of planning, equipping, and staying informed.

The themes include:

  • Week 1 (September 1-7): Plan Ahead
  • Week 2 (September 8-14): Make a Plan
  • Week 3 (September 15-21): Build a Kit
  • Week 4 (September 22-30): Stay Informed
