Fulton County Hosts 2nd Annual Talent Show Featuring Performers with Disabilities

The event concludes Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and will celebrate the extraordinary talent of Fulton County’s Training Center.
The Fulton County Board of Commissioners proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month during its March 6, 2024 meeting as part of a long-standing, national observance that prioritizes the inclusion and contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and this year’s theme: A World of Opportunities, Fulton County’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) presents the 2nd annual “One Band One Sound” Talent Extravaganza on Monday, March 25 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Central Library Auditorium – Basement Level, 1 Margaret Mitchell Square Atlanta, GA 30303. The Talent Extravaganza will be an inclusive event for people with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to demonstrate their creative expressions and showcase their talents. Approximately 28 adults from Fulton County’s Training Center - ages 30-80, volunteered to participate after being presented with the talent show event. Featured acts will include fashion models, dance performances, and solo and group vocalists.
“A World of Opportunities will drive every initiative launched by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities to continue our support for the individuals we serve,” stated LaTrina R. Foster, LPC, director of Fulton County BHDD. “This exciting talent show has become an annual event that celebrates our commitment to recognize all individuals, embrace inclusion, and prevent stereotypes that may hinder empowerment and potential.”
Fulton County’s BHDD also participated in two high school fairs that provided education for individuals with IDD on Saturday, March 2 and March 9. These fairs served as a platform to facilitate connections between students with developmental disabilities and their parents, and various community agencies providing essential services. The Department was notably present at Roswell High School and Banneker High School, actively disseminating information about the County’s three Training Center locations: South, North, and Central.
Additionally, Fulton County’s BHDD hosted a free Parent Education webinar on Thursday, March 14 called Harmony at Home. The webinar provided critical information for caregivers regarding Human Rights and Responsibilities for individuals with IDD and how to support healthy relationships and boundaries. This included information on dating and creating space and understanding within those relationships.
