Fulton County Honors Seniors in Recognition of Older Americans Month

May 03, 2022
Fulton County Senior Residents can benefit from this year’s theme of “Age My Way.”

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will proclaim May as Older Americans Month during its May 4, 2022 meeting as part of a 59-year national tradition of honoring the value and contributions of older Americans living in communities across the United States.

Fulton County Commissioners recognize Older Americans Month (OAM) each May and will continue the tradition this year by emphasizing the 2022 national theme of “Age My Way.” This recognition celebrates the beauty of aging in place and how older adults can plan to stay in their homes and live independently for as long as possible.

Throughout the year, Fulton County’s Senior Services promotes physical activities, wellness, and social connections among seniors through its four senior multipurpose facilities and 15 neighborhood senior centers.  However, as OAM kicks off on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, the department will highlight additional efforts to keep seniors engaged and help ensure a strong and positive quality of life.

“Older Americans Month is an exciting opportunity for Fulton County to honor older adults and their contributions to the community,” said Dr. Pamela Roshell, Fulton County Chief Operating Officer for Health, Human Services and Public Works. “The Fulton County Department of Senior Services will continue to encourage seniors to age their way by offering programs that enhance our communities and support healthy, independent, and fulfilling lives.”

Highlights of upcoming Older Americans Month activities include a Hybrid Celebration of Centenarians, Community Fitness Connection, and creation of a raised garden bed. Other OAM offerings also include business check-ins, a Mother’s Day celebration, and various activities that promote physical and mental wellness.

“May is always an exciting time for Senior Services and this year, we have much to celebrate.  Department staff and contractors have done an excellent job navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic while still providing high-quality services and engaging programs,” stated Ladisa Onyiliogwu, Director.

Fulton County focuses efforts and resources to achieve tangible outcomes for older Americans and recognizes the value of the Older Americans Act, the Administration on Aging, and the continued need to shape policies that inspire, influence, and enrich individuals of all ages and future generations
