Atlanta, Georgia will host the 2021 World Series games at Truist Park on Friday, October 29, 2021, through Sunday, October 31, 2021. There will be an influx of hundreds of thousands of people in the Atlanta area over the three-game days.
Viral respiratory illnesses (e.g., flu, COVID-19 infection) are common this time of year. Due to the huge number of people in public gatherings, we expect to see an increase in these illnesses, as well as the potential for other infectious diseases.
In addition, because of the high-profile nature of the event, vigilance is needed to detect severe illnesses or clusters (two or more people with similar illnesses or exposures) of illness.
Symptoms of these diseases include:
Fever and chills | Muscle aches | Lethargy | Coughing | Vomiting |Abdominal cramps | Diarrhea
The Georgia Department of Public Health and Cobb & Douglas Public Health is asking for your help in decreasing the spread of disease by encouraging the practice of good hand and respiratory hygiene and being vigilant about increased or unusual cases of illness.
Call 1-866-PUB-HLTH (1-866-782-4584) if you notice:
• An increased number of persons with fever AND vomiting and/or diarrhea, or fever AND cough incidents in your facility
• An increase in patrons asking for the closest emergency department or urgent care centers
Encourage guests to practice good hand and respiratory hygiene:
• Hand hygiene
o Wash hands with soap and water (use hand sanitizer when washing hands is not possible):
▪ After using the restroom, coughing, sneezing, or caring for someone who is ill
▪ Before eating, smoking, touching your face
• Respiratory hygiene
o Cover mouth when coughing/sneezing
o Cough/sneeze into your elbow or facial tissue and discard it in the trash
