Sau Chan is the only attorney serving in both the Civil Rights Unit and the Anti-Corruption Units. She joined the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office in May 2019 after moving to Atlanta. She got her start as a prosecutor in the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office in Richmond, Virginia, learning the ropes by handling misdemeanor and traffic cases and worked her way up to prosecuting felonies.
Her prior experience includes being part of a two-member team that handled vehicular homicides, working those cases up from the scene of the accident all the way to trial. She prosecuted white collar cases and was appointed one of only two multi-jurisdictional prosecutors in Virginia at the time to prosecute insurance fraud, working alongside a specially-trained team of investigators from the Virginia State Police. She also prosecuted animal-cruelty cases and handled civil proceedings for animal seizures.
Prosecution is her second career. She previously worked as a journalist for the Associated Press for about five years before joining Bloomberg News for 10 years. Her journalism career allowed her to travel, primarily throughout Asia. She is one of a few reporters who have visited North Korea. She has an undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature with Honors from Smith College. She has a journalism master’s degree from the University of Missouri, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law.
